Transgender Day of Remembrance
Friday, November 20, 2009
On Sunday April 19th, HRC Nevada held its second annual Family ReUNION Picnic, immediately following the AFAN AIDS Walk.
The event was attended by more than 600 people, who took part in the many family activities offered, including games, a circus play area and face painting, while great prizes were raffled off.
The fun-filled day served as perfect setting to salute the great work of the Clark County Family Services Department (CCDSF) who received the HRC Nevada Government Leadership Award. The Picnic was a huge success, in large part thanks to the support of its many sponsors, our community partners, the many volunteers who contributed their time and their resources, and the many who very generously pitched in, the day of the event, with voluntary monetary contributions.

We've received word that the House will vote on the Matthew Shepard Act very soon and we know that right-wing groups are flooding Congress with calls, emails and sickening ‘fact sheets’ full of lies about the lives of LGBT Americans. We need more calls to Members of Congress, and we need them right away. It has been ten long years and tens of thousands more victims since the Matthew Shepard Act was first introduced in Congress. We are poised for a presidential signature this year but lies from the radical right could easily derail our efforts. We must not allow them to continue to demagogue and distort the truth.

We ask you to call Congress in support of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, a bill which would provide local police and sheriff’s departments with
federal resources to combat hate violence. After more than a decade of lobbying on Capitol Hill and
seven successful votes on the bill, this critical piece of legislation is again expected to see a vote in the House this week. The call-in campaign is set for April 27-29.
It takes about 45 seconds. Members of the community are urged to call 202-224-3121.
Callers are urged to tell the Member’s office:

The Human Rights Campaign comes together with other Nevadaequality organizations including The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, PLAN, LAMBDA, PFLAG, ACLU, WEN, and others to support “Equality Days.” The event held April 21-22 in Carson City, Nevada, is the first of its kind lobbying effort providing LGBT equality activists the opportunity to educate and engage our elected officials regarding LGBT issues.
HRC Las Vegas is one of the top contributors to the event, providing contributions to the scholarship program, keynote speaker Allyson Robinson, key representation at Carson City, just to name a few. Read More »
